2018 Highlights

Silverland 2013 (4) reduced postcard 1 postcard 1 postcard 1

Having completed the Plant School Tree Course in June I have decided that my favourite tree, currently at least, is the Davidia involucrata, otherwise known as the handkerchief tree. The attached photo shows a magnificent specimen in flower at The Savill Garden, Windsor, although I have also seen one in full bloom at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, Dorset, and several at Coombe Wood, Surrey, in the impressive Japanese water gardens there.  The cherry trees under-planted with tulips at Kew Gardens were quite simply stunning too. Trees are perhaps too often

In August we drove to Italy, and I made sure we visited a couple of gardens on my wish list! Both have been visited by Monty Don and I have seen them on TV and in books, but they were even more impressive in real life. The Villa Lante at Bagnaia was truly amazing, sat on top of a hill with magnificent views. Then the Sacra Bosco at Bomarzo, a weird and wonderful, ancient place with strange, gigantic sculptures carved out of the natural rock within a mysterious, symbolic and magical,

For a second time we visited the RHS Flower Show at Knutsford, Cheshire, which is always a good excuse to take a tour of the Japanese Garden in Tatton Park, which is considered one of the finest examples in Europe. It was constructed in 1910 for Alan de Tatton, and completely restored in 2001. To take a stroll through this garden is truly enchanting, crossing over the bridge you enter into another world of symbolism and calm meditation; water, bridges, stepping stones, rocks, lanterns, a tea

In March I visited Crete for a few days as part of a Plant School study group accompanied by John Fielding, author of ‘Flowers of Crete’. The island is a plant lovers’ paradise and we were not disappointed.  The early spring flowers we found in the centre of the island and on the south facing slopes of Mount Ida were simply stunning, but the variety and beauty of the orchid colonies will stay with me forever.

I enjoy photography and art, and simply capturing in an image the beauty of the world around us. I like to create albums of the pictures I have taken so that I can remember extraordinary places, unique moments and special times which, maybe one day, I will not be able to recall without them. I have also made one for an exceptional garden I have worked in for many years, which is very important to me, and now that the customer has had to move house,
